Mermaids : Mythical Legend

Mermaids has always been a creature of mystery, fantasy and extreme beauty. It’s the elegance and gracefulness that has been known to enchant people for a very long time. But are mermaids real or are they just a mythical legend.

In the 1500′s Europeans were carving mermaids into their ships. The mythical beings were said to be half woman, half fish. The drawings consisted of beautiful women with very long hair and very pale skin with human arms but the lower half of the body was much like a fish with fins. Back in those days, many of the sailors believed they were the wives of sailors before them who had died. The legend continued to say that these women waited in the sea for their men to come back to them.
Other legends state that women who were scorned by their lovers would make a deal with a powerful God to become a mermaid. Once they were transformed into their mermaid state they were to live underwater in the ocean without any emotion. It is said that these women become immortal and are left to roam to seas of the world forever.

In Greek mythology mermaids are also known as Sirens. A Siren is a seductive women who calls out to the sailors in the sea only to lure them to smash their ships on rocks and face death. Many believed the women were scorned lovers looking for revenge.
“The Little Mermaid” was a story written by Hans Christian Andersen in 1836 about a tragic tale of a young mermaid who gives up her voice so that she can walk on land. There is actually a statue that was built in 1913 and still stands in Denmark today to honor the story. This story is the most common among people in today’s world.

The Animal Planet put out a documentary “Mermaids: The Body Found” which some believed to be real documented footage of a Mermaid’s body found in the ocean. Animal Planet commented and said it was a fictional work of art that the show produced. After much backlash, Animal Planet explained that they were trying to recreate sightings and reports over the years. Many people were very disappointed that this documentary was a hoax.
The myths surrounding mermaids is something that will forever capture the imaginations and hearts of millions. There is no evidence found that these mythical beautiful women under the sea exist. The ocean is so deep and so much of the oceans around the world have just be yet to be researched and discovered. This is perhaps the most interesting and exciting fact about mermaids is the mystery behind them. With the ocean, you never know what you may find living down in those waters
